Geronimo dies of pneumonia

I was working today, cataloguing some donated negatives, and came across this image - a piece of history from an old Lawton newspaper - exactly 100 years old! Geronimo was the chief of the Chiricahua Apache Indian band, who fought against Mexico and the United States to keep their tribal lands. No such luck in the end... He was eventually captured by the US Army, and became a prisoner of war at Fort Sill.

Sad! Hero in my book though because he fought! ;)

Wow, I had no idea he'd been in prison for twenty years. What a find you have there.

Well, they named some stuff after him on Ft. Sill, so, everybody wins, right?
