Etsy Artisan Interview - bijoux designs for you

Here's a mother/daughter team from Toronto! April and her mom opened their Etsy shop in May 2008. Lots of neat items at reasonable prices. They even have a "Deal of the Day" at their shop, something I haven't seen anywhere else. If you work with jewelry or beads, don't miss their second shop of supplies at Rouge River Beads. And when you visit their blog , you can count on certain topics being covered, at different times of the week. That's always nice. But enough small talk, let's get right into the interview:
  • What's the name of your Etsy shop?
You can find my etsy shop at bijouxdesignsforyou

  • What types of products do you sell?
We create a variety of earrings, necklaces, our ever popular bookmarks, microwave mitts and more!
  • Are you involved with any of the Etsy teams?
Not at the moment. It’s something I’ve thought about but haven’t pursued as of yet.

  • What is your favorite item in your shop today?
Probably the new line of MOM bookmarks. I am a new mommy myself and a sucker for anything that says mom on it!

  • How did you find out about Etsy? Where you a buyer before a seller?
We were actually looking for somewhere to sell our work online and that’s how we got involved with Etsy. I was a seller first but bought some holiday gifts there this past season (with many more items on my wish list!)

  • Over the years, what materials and mediums have you worked with? What's your favorite?

My mom has been creating for as long as I remember. We began with sewing, making a variety of home d├ęcor and gift items. We have also done folk art and then a few years ago I took her to a jewelry making class for her birthday. We were both addicted immediately and the rest is history! I adore shells and mother of pearl. I just love the look and feel of them so I create a lot with them because that's also what I personally like to wear. I am also in love with finding cute charms and ways to incorporate them into our products.

  • Do you have an online photo storage site, where we can see more about you and your surroundings?
Not at the moment. It’s on my list for the new year…as soon as I can find some more hours in the day!
  • Are there additional venues where you sell your work?
I also have set up shop on Artfire, and participate in several craft shows every year.
  • Are selling your products a full-time job, or do you have an additional occupation, outside the home?
My mom and I have been working really hard at growing Bijoux Designs, and for both of us this our primary job (plus our supplies shop). However, I also have a 6 month old baby (definitely a full time job) and I waitress two nights a week.

  • Everyone knows images are important when selling on the internet. What's your procedure for taking photos of your products? Do you have any tips on taking better photographs?
Photography is something that I think many new sellers (us included) have struggled with. I think getting to know your camera and finding where you get the best natural light is important. I set aside a day when the light is good and do a picture taking marathon!

  • We are all looking for good marketing advice. What's the best tip or trick you can share with us?
That’s a tough one! I think for each individual business you need to find A) your target market AND B) what works best for you and your business. Unfortunately this sometimes takes some time and some trial and error. I think wearing my product, getting out in the public and doing shows, participating in a few blog giveaways, twittering and blogging have been a good mix for me. I think it’s about getting your name out there and having the right people see it!

  • Where can people find out more about you - do you have a blog, website, instant messaging account?
You can check out my blog and please feel free to come and tweet with me at http://twitter.com/bijouxdesigns
