vocabulary building #5

This is a simple sounding word, but I was curious about it, because Dawsey is writing Juliet, describing his experiences on the island during the war:

"I have a slight limp from a badly set leg, and though it kept me from army service, it has never been bad enough to bother me. I was very hale, and so I began to deliver water around to some cottages."

From The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society, by Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrows.
