Internet Artisan Interview - Diane Fergurson

I first met Diane on 1000 Markets, when I was accepted into the Mind Body Spirit (MBS) Marketplace. The purpose of this marketplace is to offer "quality products that are designed to nurture, inspire, heal and honor the spirit inside all of us." This attitude relates so well with why I enjoy art and create the items I do. And I really appreciate the true professional atmosphere that 1000markets offers. Diane is one of the people who contributes to this feeling. Please come and visit our Marketplace, and you'll see what I mean.
  • What's the name of your business/shop?
My business name is the same as my real name. Diane Fergurson
  • Do you have a registered domain name and/or a blog?

I have a regular website, which primarily showcases my artwork. I sell on 4 online venues:

I am also market manager for the Mind Body Spirit Marketplace on 1000 Markets:

I have 2 blogs: In a Creative Context [and] Mind Body Spirit Odyssey

  • What type of handmade products do you sell?
I'm a fine artist. I create large mixed media paintings. Usually with spiritual themes.
I also design jewelry and sell it.
  • Show us a piece you recently finished
Left: Painting and Right: Jewelry
  • What are you working on right now? Any sketches?
I'm making some new jewelry to go online. I'm also working with a photographer to design and
market a different line of jewelry. I think I've finally figured out the theme to base my next series of artwork around, so I just need to start the paintings.

  • If you have a website or blog, what do you use for advertising? What do your avatars look like?
I have the artfire and etsy kiosk on my facebook page. I also have the etsy kiosk on my blog page and a 1000 Markets link too.

The things that are Mind Body Spirit related, the avatar is an eye....taken from one of my paintings. My other avatars are sections of my paintings.

  • Which online selling vendors do you use? What do you like best about each one?
All the four selling vendors are different. They are all at different stages in their online development and offer different options and buyers. I'm happy with all of them.

  • Are you involved in social networking? What's your favorite and why? If you're not involved, you must have a good reason!

I got involved with social networking on Facebook primarily to help showcase products from the Mind Body Spirit Marketplace, which I manage. It's very enjoyable and I've really learned quite a bit.

I also use twitter and the wonderful resources available at

  • All of us can use a helpful business hint once a week. What's yours?
Seriously, don't keep all your eggs in one basket. Sell your items on multiple sites. They all
have different buyers. By doing that, I was able to double my online sales last year... even though the economy was so bad.

  • Do you have a "modus operandi" for computing the price of a handmade object? Tell us your formula?
I don't really have a formula.

  • We'd love to see your little corner of the world, where you create
  • Where do you see your artwork in one year? Any plans in the works?
I'm a firm believer that you can't really plan how long it will take to complete a piece of art and also what direction it will take. That kills the creative process. Your artwork takes on a life of it's own and actually so does the jewelry.

  • OK, it's the storybeader's turn to pick a favorite.
Diane's mandalas are what first attracted me to her artwork. They have beautiful rich colors and the designs just makes my mind start spinning! This is one of my favorites:

Lovely work! Her jewelry is really cool, and I appreciate her advice about diversifying online. I'll have to give that some more thought!
