A Month in Photographs - February


We started out the month with a blizzard (5) -  I had two snow days from work (that gave me a little bit more time to write out my Sat. Strategy Sessions!)  Even though we kept the faucets dripping (1) our pipes froze up, and then broke (had to go a few days without running water!)  I did some art journaling and started using puzzle pieces in collages.  This one (2) I liked so much, I decided to frame it.  It‘s in my Etsy shop!  That got me thinking...  I bought a "Saturday Evening Post" puzzle and spend a good part of the month working on it (3).  Valentine's Day came and DH bought me some flowers (8) {:-D!  My paper beads arrived from Thailand last month, so I decided to go ahead and make mom's Chanukah  present, like I planned (7).  That got me thinking...(yes, again) maybe I can make my own beads!  We’ll see...  I promised myself to practice drawing tangles; here’s a Tortuca box, for the letter T (6).  At the end of the month, I knew Spring was just around the corner when I opened my front door, and saw daffodils in the yard (4)!

February Etsyblogger Feature - BunnyKissd

I hadn't seem the artwork of BunnyKissd before this month.    Diana's Etsy shop is called Faierie Garden Fancies, and when I saw it, I knew I was going to have fun.  She has an eclectic array of items for sale: jewelry, sculpture, paintings.  Even items by her daughter.  I haven't seen that before - what a cute idea. 


 I like her sculptured doll the best, Melusinia.  Here she is with her wooden treasure box.

Saturday Strategy Session, Week 8 - tweaking your marketing goals


We have come to the last personalized marketing session, filling out these Worksheets. It's time to pull things together. So come with me, as I tweak my marketing strategies. I’ll also include some hints and suggestions at how you can fix your own strategies.

6. Pull out your Worksheet 1 and reread your answers for the first 5 questions and question 10. Do you include this information in all areas of your marketing? If you don't, how could you incorporate your strengths, unique characteristics, values, brand identity and the problems that you solve for your customers in your marketing efforts. Really spend some time on this one.

 Online selling venues and social networks are great places to market your products.  My Etsy shop is the perfect place to attract casual visitors.  Since I’m most familiar with Etsy, I’m going to show you some thoughts about how to include marketing information in your shop.  

The first thing prospective buyers see when they visit an Etsy shop is the “Info and Appearance” at the top of the page.  That’s a good place to define your brand and tell people what problems you will solve for them.  Hopefully, you have lots of comments in the Feedback area.  Look through there and choose some quotes for a new blog sidebar (you might want to contact the commenter.)  And what’s your unique characteristic?  You should be including that in your item description! {:-D  That's one thing I do now.  All my haikus are part of my journal descriptions.  (At  festivals, I have my haikus on the sales tags!)  Your profile and policies sections are good places to tell potential customers about your values and strengths.  I don’t feel comfortable telling people how wonderful I am, but maybe I can say that I’m “talented and honest” somewhere else, because it's important to me.

7.  Reread your answers from Worksheet 2 before moving on.  Which items from the list above [Week 6 - too long to list here] could you implement immediately to help you reach your short-term goals?

This question doesn’t make much sense, since I spread the worksheets out over eight weeks, not 3 days!  The short term (monthly) goals have already been completed.  Actually, one of the things on my list wasn’t completed, so I’ll add that to my March goals.  One of the things April emphasizes about a short-term goal is that it should be pleasurable!  I like that!  One goal on my February list was to redo my Etsy shop - that was fun!


8. Which marketing efforts will help you reach your long-term goals?
One of my long-term goals is to make my arts and crafts into a real business.  Storybeader doesn’t have money for high dollar festivals right now, so I need to concentrate on items that I can sell locally or place on consignment.  That means, in addition to my online shop, I need to pull myself out of my shell and visit local stores.  Maybe explore businesses outside my home town.  
Here are the three long term goals I wrote down:
1. make handmade paper and paper beads  
I am a big recycler, and love the idea of using shredded paper and magazines to make products.  Because this is new to me, I plan to look for potentially new customers, both online and off.  While I’m learning different techniques, I will visit forums and ask questions.  Maybe take some classes and visit with other artists.  These new products will be added to my Etsy shop over the coming months, and I will be hosting a few giveaways.  
2. work on my facebook page  
I’ve started my new blog series, “Facebook Friday” to help other beginners like myself  grapple with all the information about Facebook.  There’s always changes going on.  I need to pay special attention to my fan page, adding links and comments.  Maybe I’ll meet a whole new group of people.

3. get more involve with a specialized Etsy team 
Since my Etsy shop is entirely paper now, getting involved in a "paper goods" team will probably help me.  I’ve looked at a few teams, such as Etsy Paper, Etsy Papermakers Guild and Creative Paper Artists.   I need to decide where I would fit best.  If anyone on Etsy is involved with any of these teams, I’d love to hear about it.   

After question 8. (our VERY last question!) April tells us to “go back to your answer to question 4 on worksheet 3 [last week], and include those five things [that you like to do] in your marketing plan.”  
Here were my five things:

blogging {♥}
participating in challenges and prompts
belonging to online selling venues
participating in forums and threads
social networking - tweeting and using facebook

April separated her five things into daily, weekly, and monthly activities.  This is how my marketing plan turned out:

DAILY: Participate in forum discussions, List or renew online items, Spend 30 minutes on Twitter and Entrecard
WEEKLY: Blog at least 3 times a week, Facebook updates, Participate in prompts, Network with art journalists and other artists
MONTHLY: Participate in challenges, Review goals and marketing efforts, Pull photos together

Facebook Friday - are you invisible?

Someone over at the Etsybloggers team mentioned last week that the Facebook admin changed their settings again, but I wasn't understanding what she was talking about.  Then enchantedbeads mentioned it again, over at the Handmade Harbor team page.  I was interested in this, so I surfed over to Facebook to find out what’s going on.  Here's what Abby Smith, the creator of You Are Invisible!!! , is telling us:


The “New Facebook” has a newsfeed setting that by default is automatically set to show ONLY posts from people who you’ve recently interacted with or interacted the most with (which would be limited to the couple of weeks just before people started switching to the new profile). So in other words, for both business and personal pages, unless your friends/fans commented on one of your posts within those few weeks or vice versa – you are now invisible to them and they are invisible to you!!
This means if a friend or family member has been away from their Facebook page for a couple of weeks or doesn’t comment on your entry, they will disappear from view.  This might be beneficial to some, if you feel overwhelmed by entries on your News Feed.  But remember, at the same time this is happening, you are becoming invisible on their pages too.  (just a note: Facebook is deciding for you what’s your “Top News,” so it’s a good idea to toggle over to “Most Recent” when you get to your page) 


 
If you want to change your default back to the "original" setting from a month ago, go to your homepage.  Click on "Most Recent."  There's a drop down arrow right there.  Click on it, then click on "Edit Options."  You are currently set as "Friends and Pages You Interact With Most."  Change and Save this to "All Of Your Friends and Pages."

And while you’re on Facebook, you might want to make sure your friends and fans can comment on your posts.  You’ll be surprised how much you might be missing!  To change this setting in your personal pages, go to Edit My Profile, at the left side, under your name.  There’s a little sentence on the left that says “Visit your privacy settings to control who can see the information on your profile.”  It brings you to "Choose Your Privacy Settings".  Go to “Customize settings” in the middle of the page, next to the little pencil.   Under the “Things others share” is “Can comment on posts.”  Change “Friends” to “Everyone.”

  Edit My Profile>Privacy Settings >Customize Settings>Can Comment On Posts >Everyone
 


 Now, I’m getting conflicting messages about what’s happening to our business pages.  Abby (from You Are Invisible!!!) says you don‘t have to worry because business pages don't have a newsfeed! But if  you want you fans to be able to comment, you might want to check that out.  It’s very simple.  Go to your business page, and click on “Edit Page.”  Then look and see what the “Posting Ability” is.  You should be allowing  “Users Can Write or Post On Content On The Wall.”  I have all three boxes checked in this area.

T is for Tangle

 No, No - not the dance.  It's a form of doodling, short for zentangle!  Isn't this a beautiful tangle my friend Erika did, from Little Andalucia?

Let me give you a short history.  Zentangles were created by Rick Roberts and Maria Thomas.  You can find their website here  This is their explanation of what a Zentangle is:

    Zentangle is an easy to learn method of creating beautiful images from repetitive patterns. It is a fascinating new art form that is fun and relaxing. It increases focus and creativity. Zentangle provides artistic satisfaction and an increased sense of personal well being. Zentangle is enjoyed by a wide range of skills and ages and is used in many fields of interest.

But what's the difference between a Zentangle and a Tangle?  I've been told there are 102 teachable Zentangle forms and everything else is just a tangle doodle.  You can find these tangle patterns on the website TanglePattern.com operated by Linda Farmer.

Feel like taking a class and learning more about this art form?  They are given by Certified Zentangle Teachers (CZT), all over the world!  Here's a list of the teachers and their locations.  Of course, if you like having instructions in your hands, buy a book on tangles.  That's right.  Do a search for "tangle" on Amazon and you'll find any number of books. 



You can also buy an original Zentangle kit from Rick and Maria (mentioned above) complete with "tiles" to draw on, Micron pens (that are acid free and draws a 0.25 mm wide line), pencils and sharpener, instruction book and DVD, and 20 named Tangles.  All this comes in a handsome container.

Saturday Strategy Session, Week 7 - narrowing your marketing tactics

Last week, I listed all the different marketing activities we might be using.  Maybe you thought of some I didn't list!  Now it's time to review our personal lists and choose which items are the most effective and what doesn't worked.

2.  How much time per day do you spend on your marketing tactics?  Be realistic and look at how much time you can set aside each day.   April (from Blacksburg Belle) is talking daily here!

I went round and round with this question, trying to decide what to say here.  Because I work full time, there's only early mornings and evenings for me to spend with my family and with my artwork.  April considers blogging and forum involvement as marketing tactics (to me, this feels more like being with friends {:-D)  So by her standards, I spend about 4 hours a day marketing, even more on the weekend.  I don't think I should spend any more time than that! 

3.  Note any items from your list that you can't stand doing.
I like everything that I do on my list; I guess that's why I spend so much time marketing.  If I had to choose something, I really don't like those face to face encounters - going into shops and asking people to sell my jewelry and journals.  But after I find someone willing to take my products, there's not much for me to do except reap the rewards.  Another thing is I don't really like setting up a borrowed tent at festivals.  But once I’m at a show, I generally have a good time.

4. Note the top five things from your list that you like doing or think you would like to do.

5.  Note any items from your list that you've tried that haven't helped your business.  April says some items would include, "blogging sporadically, tweeting once a month, participating in forums every couple of months and any other half-assed attempts at marketing don't count."
It's hard to tell what hasn't work.  None of the gift cards I've offered on Etsy have sold.  Maybe I should sell less expensive cards..  I decided to put a "custom orders" Treasure Necklace icon on my blog, so people would know I still make jewelry.  But nobody had approach me.  Maybe that's because I didn't have a contact address!  Whoops!  All my jewelry is now on a site called Bonanza - maybe I will add a "custom orders" card there...

Facebook Friday - Impressions and Feedback


If you have a facebook fan page, have you noticed the line above the date (see above)  It reads:
 # Impressions -  % Feedback

If you don't see it, you're probably on your News Feed page.  You can see what I'm talking about if you go to your Wall.  I get to mine by clicking on my icon, in the upper left corner.  To see only your entries on your Wall, click on your fan page name (toogle off of Everyone - see below.)  My name is storybeader.


So here’s the numbers that I was talking about.  The number of Impressions measures: the views that appear on a user's news feed + the number of visits to your fan page + any Likes or Recommends.  These are considered RAW Impressions.  The RAW Impressions number is a bit misleading because every time a fan refreshes their facebook homepage, it is "rendered" as an Impression.  While not all users are necessarily viewing your story, Facebook made a request for it so it is rendered.  Not a very good count.

The other number, Feedback, measures the number of comments and likes.  Nothing else - not even your link clicks or video plays.  Again, not a very good measure.  What's good about the Feedback levels are, they can be used as a basic guide for seeing what content is popular with fans. If you do want to increase your Feedback percentage, you need to include stories that will provoke a comment.  Asking a question will also help in getting Feedback ... and having lots of friends looking at your page!  At the same time, if you have friends on Facebook, you should show your support and comment, or Like what they say.  Now I've heard that Feedback levels average about 0.10% but this number can vary.  So don’t be upset when you see such a low number. 

I think a much better number to look at is the Impression number after you scroll down the page a bit.  After one or two weeks pass, these Impression numbers should be much higher, showing you that people have been coming by your Fan Page and checking up on you.  That should make you feel better!

AlphabeThursday - Stripes + Puzzles = Struzzle

Do you remember synchronicity from the Artist's Way?  It's the experience of two events that appear not to be related which occur together in a meaningful way.  When I came upon a synchronicity moment while putting together this post, I knew I had to share it with my AlphabeThursday class.  It all started when I was looking through some Tangle patterns that started with the letter S, and I came upon "Struzzle" created by Jo Newsham.  



Here's my first try at a Struzzle tangle pattern.  You make a basic block with pencil, then draw in some puzzle pieces and add stripes to the pieces.  I add some stars for good measure!  You can make a Struzzle tangle too, by following these easy instructions.


 But the sychronicity? You see, last week I began using puzzles in my art journaling.  I've always loved jigsaw puzzles.  I have fond memories of sitting down with my uncle and working on them.  It grew to be an obsession with me.

Book Review - A Severed Head

I have to say, I've never read a book like A Severed Head, by Iris Murdoch, before.  Written in a man's voice, by a woman author, with lots of sexual overtones between  family and friends.  The novel was written in the early part of Murdoch’s career; it was later made into a play. 
Murdoch (1919-1999) was an Irish-born British author and philosopher, who won the Booker Prize in 1978 for her novel The Sea, the Sea.   She wrote over 30 novels and plays, five books of philosophy, two books of poems, and one book of short stories. Her work spans the second half of the 20th century. 

A Severed Head is full with surprises.  In the beginning, I could predict when something was about to happen.  But the ending really surprised me.  It sure was a “roller coaster” of a story.  I wonder how Murdoch thought up all the relationships her characters had with each other.  The novel must have been quite risqué when it was published in 1961.  It also deals with some serious issues, such as abortion and suicide.  I don’t want to say too much about it, in case you feel like picking it up.  A little over 200 pages (in paperback) with lots of short chapters, it was an easy read.

Saturday Strategy Session, Week 6 - updating our marketing plan


We begin Worksheet 3 in Week 6 - all about reviewing your current marketing plan.  If you're like me, I write down various activities I want to pursue, but don't have no plan.  April (from Blacksburg Belle) says, "Don't freak out if you don't have a marketing plan.  You should fill out this worksheet regardless of how you currently market your creative products and services.  This will help you pull everything together."  I'm planning to put my marketing plan in a 3-ring binder and add a sheet with monthly goals.  Everything together!  Then I can check off the goals, and reevaluate what didn't get done.  One of my goals for this month was to advertise on Project Wonderful.  Here's the storybeader on the Comfortable Shoes Studio


But back to April's worksheet...  

1.  Here's your chance to list what YOU do to market your products or services. 
I looked at the list April had, and divided it into three sections - A) what I do on a regular basis, B) what I've tried but don't do regularly, and C) what I don't do, but April and I have thought of. 

So take any of the items listed below to make your personal list!  Next week, we will take our lists and finish this worksheet.  If you've just joining us, this is a good place to start!  April notes, "If you use any of the things below as a way for customers to get to know you, you should include it."  As I've said before, writing things out on paper (or typing them on a computer, like I do) is a good way to collect your thoughts.

Facebook Friday - Pagemodo Pagebuilder

Do you have a facebook account, and want to personalize it a bit? 

It's easy to do with Pagemodo's Pagebuilder.  The service is 100% free for the first page, and "it's versatility allows users to add pictures, embed videos, change the color, type in a test, and more."

You can watch this video and see what I mean.


Much simpler than designing a blog, Pagemodo's Pagebuilder gives you a choice of templates with a variety of box layouts - however best to describe your business or yourself!  No coding or html knowledge required.  If you have a blog, you definitely have enough skills to follow the instructions on pagemodo. 

The page you design will show up in its own tab.  Mine is called Welcome!  I wasn't sure about the background color, and I can't change it now.  But it's growing on me.  What do you think?

Rats, Rags and Raindotty

I decided to enroll in Ms. Jenny Matlock's AlphabeThursday class after peeking in the window, and noticing my friend Anna, at Anna's Adornments, enjoying herself so.  Now it's off to school for me on Thursdays.    

Always eager to learn new things, I thought Ms. Jenny's class would be the perfect place for me to practice drawing my zentangle patterns.  I'll be using the first letters of patterns found on the TanglePattern website.  A Tangle?  There's lots of descriptions, but I would say it's a meditative stroke of the pen, that makes a design.  Today the class is looking at the letter R.  


Please don't tell Ms. Matlock I tore a page out of The Story Teller book, especially since it's the fairy tale of "Cinderella or the Little Glass Slipper."  I've renamed it "Rats and Rags" - no one will ever know!  And I'm using Raindotty, an original tangle pattern by Jane Monk.

Etsybloggers Carnival - Winter Blues

One of the carnival topics (Feb 14, 2011) that Linda from pruitthandcrafts put to us this week is: "We are in the middle of winter! Write something about you/your family's winter experiences."

In the past few years, winters have not been the best season around my house.  Last week was the first time we had real bad weather, with moisture in the air and busted pipes under the house.  It was nice having two days off work, but not having indoor plumbing was the pits!  We called in the plumbers - five days later, everything was fixed.  It wasn't too expensive, but now I'm a little weary.  The second winter storm hit early this morning.  Luckily, it wasn't as bad as everyone was expecting.

Last winter, a bad ice storm blew in at Christmas time.  It brought the city to a standstill, broke trees and power lines, and my neighborhood (among thousands in Oklahoma) lost power for days on end.

I see the green of the crocuses in the front yard and think, what do they know that I don't?  Are they just trying to soak up the sun while it's out?  Everyone is saying they won't complain when the stifling hot weather arrives.  I won't either!

Sketchbook Challenge - February: Opposites 1

The Sketchbook Challenge just started this year, and I'm so glad I found it!  I'm hoping to learn more about drawing from the hosts and other artists throughout the year.  The object of the challenge is to create something in your sketchbook, following a monthly theme.  February's theme is OPPOSITES.  Here's my first image, interpreting "opposites" using words, colors and images.

I'm a wordy person, and have always been a list maker. 
So in honor of List It Tuesday, I have TWO lists; antonyms!

Saturday Strategy Session, Week 5 - meeting long-term goals


Last week, we looked at monthly and yearly goals.  Before we start thinking about meeting those goals, remember (if you claim your business on your income taxes) that you ARE running a business.  The simple, general rule of small business ownership (in the United States) is: you have to make a profit in 3 out of 5 years, to show "the presumption of profit motive."  Here's a short informative article entitled  "Business or Hobby" put out by the IRS.

Ok, now let's go ahead and complete Worksheet #2 with three final questions:
5. Where would you love to see your business in three years?
I would love to see Storybeader making a profit in the next three years {:-D.  And start traveling to reputable shows outside of Oklahoma.  My hometown just doesn’t have the clientele I need to grow as a business.  So many people say they want their business to become their full-time job.  Not me - I don't want that worry right now.  I would like my business to have it's own studio and office in our house, though.

 
I’m not sure how long DH and I will continue living in Lawton, but for now I'm happy working at my museum.  Maybe in ten years, I'll retired and we'll move to Norman (go Sooners!) to be closer to my family and to be in a college community.  


6.  What would you have to do to get your business to where you want it to be in three years?
I have to be more careful and think of Storybeader as a business and not a hobby!  Sell some supplies that I’m not using, and use up the things that I have.  Be careful about the art shows I get myself into and sell more artwork on consignment.  April (from Blackburg Belle) says “It’s okay if you don’t have all the answers.”  She suggests that you ask others for help.  Don’t forget about family members and good friends, who might be of assistance.  Is there a business consultant in your family, or a good friend who’s successful in your niche?  I don’t know if we could actually add onto our house, but my big brother is an architect and he could give us some advice. 

7.  What would you sacrifice to reach the goals above?
April had some good suggestions: “You may need to spend more time working on your business, save money to have a safety net to make your business full-time, or break out of your comfort zone to reach your goals.”   Saving money would be a sacrifice but not too difficult.  And it would help me show a profit at the end of the year (as you can see, I've been thinking about taxes this week - I brought mine to our CPA.)  Approaching stores with my artwork would definitely be stepping outside my comfort zone.  And I was just thinking of starting a new series of Facebook tips for small businesses, but I need to do some research before I start counseling others.  I did add a new welcome tab to storybeader's facebook page, and I need to blog about it! 


That's the end of Worksheet 2!  Some things to remember: continue to look and find more goals for the future.  One thing that works for me, at the museum and with Storybeader, is breaking down large goals into smaller components.  Don't forget to put in writing three more short-term goals at the end of this month.  Next week, we'll begin Worksheet 3, "Reviewing your current marketing plan."   It looks fun!
