AlphabeThursday - P is for Portrait

Sam's hat!

I work in a museum archives.  And spend a lot of time storing and preserving documents and photographs.  So when my Art Journaling Ning announced its first challenge with Less Herger (ComfortableShoes), I went straight to the photo archives and did a word search.

"Cowboys" are our subject.  I live in Oklahoma and there's lots of open land.  That means ranching and cowboys are very popular.  Photo donations include a lot of cowboys.

I found a bunch of good portraits, but my favorite was this movie star.  I forget his name, but he wasn't Singing Sam!  That was my invention.  Actually, Sam doesn't look anything like the movie star I started with, but I needed a jumping off point.

I thought, since I drew a cowboy, I needed to draw a cowgirl too.  Here's Annie Oakley.  At least (again!) that's what I started out with.  Another part of this challenge was color.  Less picked "old timey colors - yellow ochre, sepia and dusky demin blue."  So Annie has those colors in mind, except my yellow ochre is a little too light!

Come on down you 'all and visit Ms. Jenny's blog  ...off on my tangent...  and see what other words were chosen for AlphabeThursday posts.

I love how Sam looks like a wanted poster and Annie has a movie strip around her :) Perfect!

I remember having to draw cowboys during the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo when I was a little girl. I always tried to get away with just drawing a cactus.

It has already been said, but it's apparent that your practice in drawing faces is really showing now. Your characters really have character! :-)
