AlphabeThursday - U is for Umbrella

The word Umbrella has a great history.  It originates from the Latin  “umbra” meaning shaded.  Add the French suffix “ella” (attached to words meaning “little”) and you have “little shadow.”

The oldest reference of an umbrella dates to the year 21 A.D. in Ancient China, when an emperor had one designed for his ceremonial carriage.  The umbrella, also called a parasol, is used the world over, to shade a person from the sun or rain, depending on the weather.

I made this umbrella stamp a few years ago, and once is a while, it comes in handy.  Like now!

Here's some other handmade and vintage umbrellas I found on Etsy:

Uk-seon from Seoul, South Korea has lots of adorable cat stamps.  This is a favorite.

This gorgeous parasol is made from rice paper.  Not for rainy days, but perfect to provide shade.
From Jean in Sussex, Wisconsin.

Now here's something you can use out in the rain.  From Audrey Trubshaw.

You've got to look at this up close.  It's an art quilt/wall hanging called
Dogs and Cats, by Barbara in Richmond, Virginia.

One more, from Emily, in Ireland.  Too adorable!

I hope you enjoyed looking around on Etsy with me.
Come visit other bloggers with Ms. Jenny and her class, over at AlphabeThursday.

A lovely collage of umbrella's :-)
We've been in need of them this week in Sydney - the only good thing about a rainy day is gumboots and umbrella's!

That's a nice post ! It's true they were made to protect you from the sun, umbra meaning shade. Of course now, as we all want to be brown and not wet, it became a protection against rain !
